From July 2018 to January 2021, Nthanda served in the Government Compliance Unit at the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), where she played a crucial role in ensuring compliance within the public sector. Her position in this specialized unit allowed her to focus on governmental bodies and public institutions, promoting adherence to tax policies and improving compliance across government agencies.
Contributions and Achievements
In her role with the Government Compliance Unit, Nthanda was instrumental in developing strategies that enhanced transparency and compliance within public institutions. She worked closely with various government departments, implementing initiatives to streamline tax reporting and strengthen accountability. Her efforts contributed to a significant improvement in compliance rates among governmental bodies, and she became a key point of contact for compliance-related matters within the public sector.
Skills Developed
Nthanda’s experience in the Government Compliance Unit enabled her to build a strong foundation in public administration, compliance auditing, and regulatory policy. She developed skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, and policy enforcement, making her well-versed in the intricacies of government operations and compliance standards. This experience also provided her with valuable insights into the complexities of public sector governance and the role of policy in fostering economic integrity.
Internship: Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare
Prior to this position, Nthanda gained valuable experience as a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) intern. In this role, she supported the design and development of data collection and analysis tools, participated in data collection and analysis, and assisted with record-keeping and report writing. This foundational experience equipped her with strong analytical and organizational skills, which proved instrumental in her subsequent role within the Government Compliance Unit at the Malawi Revenue Authority.
Both experiences in M&E and government compliance have positioned her as a resourceful professional, skilled in supporting regulatory frameworks and driving efficient government operations.
Nthanda resigned from the Revenue Authority to focus on scaling her NGO, the Ntha Foundation, after the organisation was awarded $250,000 from the World Bank to implement the Digital Malawi Project; in a public-private partnership with the Malawi Government.
Impact and Future Aspirations
The skills and knowledge gained from her tenure at the MRA’s Government Compliance Unit continue to influence her approach to leadership and policy advocacy. As she advances her career with a focus on business, technology, and international development, Nthanda is committed to leveraging her experience to drive policy innovation and sustainable growth in Malawi and across Africa. She aims to bridge the gap between public and private sectors, fostering partnerships that prioritize transparency, economic development, and digital transformation across the continent.
