International Day to Protect Education from Attack | KWATHU KOLLECTIVE

On September 9th, we join the global community in observing the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This day, established by the United Nations in 2020, highlights the critical need to safeguard educational institutions, students, and educators from the devastating impacts of armed conflict. At Kwathu Kollective, we are deeply committed to this cause, leveraging innovation and creativity to ensure education remains a beacon of hope and a pathway to a brighter future.

This year, the significance of this observance is further amplified as it coincides with the African Union (AU) Day. The AU Day celebrates the unity and progress of African nations, emphasizing the importance of peace, security, and development across the continent. By aligning these two important observances, we underscore the vital role that education plays in fostering peace and stability in Africa.

Kwathu Kollective’s Commitment

Kwathu Kollective is an innovation and creativity network in Africa, dedicated to empowering the next generation of creatives and innovators. Our initiatives focus on providing digital learning and innovation hubs, fostering entrepreneurial skills, and supporting creative projects that drive social change. We believe that education, coupled with innovation, is a powerful tool for development and peace.

Our Involvement and Impact

Over the past year, Kwathu Kollective has been actively involved in several projects aimed at protecting and promoting education. We have:

  • Established Innovation Hubs: We have set up innovation and creativity hubs in Lilongwe and Mangochi, providing safe and inspiring spaces for learning and collaboration.
  • Promoted Digital Skills: Through our Digital Malawi Project, we have trained hundreds of youth in digital and entrepreneurial skills, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in the modern world2.
  • Supported Creative Projects: We have provided resources and support for creative projects that address social issues and promote peace and development.
  • Advocated for Education: We have raised awareness about the importance of protecting education and the role of innovation in creating resilient educational systems.

A Call to Action

As we commemorate this important day, we call on all stakeholders—governments, international organizations, civil society, and individuals—to join us in our efforts to protect education from attack. Let us work together to create a world where every child has the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment, free from the fear of violence and disruption.

Conclusion

The International Day to Protect Education from Attack and the African Union Day remind us of the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding the future of our children. At Kwathu Kollective, we remain steadfast in our commitment to this cause, and we invite you to stand with us in making education a priority for all.

Together, we can build a brighter, more peaceful future through the power of education and innovation.
