Cohort 2 Progress: NEF | KWATHU UPGRADE

In January 2025, we embarked on an exciting new chapter with the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) through the launch of the Nyenyezi Entrepreneurship Fellowship (NEF) โ€” a programme designed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools, guidance, and practical exposure needed to thrive in Malawiโ€™s evolving innovation ecosystem.

Although our initial plans centered on launching the fifth cohort of the Mโ€™mawa Apprenticeship Programme (MAP), the voices and ambitions of our selected students inspired us to adapt โ€” a decision that gave birth to NEF Cohort 2.

A Transformative 16-Week Experience

Now at the midpoint of the programme, our seven fellows have immersed themselves in a journey of learning, experimentation, and growth. Through intensive workshops, expert mentorship, and real-world entrepreneurial tasks, theyโ€™ve begun translating classroom knowledge into tangible innovations and viable business models.

Progress Check-in: Midpoint Milestone

Last week, we were honored to host a team of lecturers from MUST, who visited the Kwathu Kollective to engage with the fellows and assess their development. This visit marked a significant milestone โ€” offering both reflection and validation of the fellows’ hard work thus far.

The lecturers had in-depth conversations with the fellows about their progress, challenges, and aspirations. They also explored the entrepreneurial projects each fellow is crafting, ranging from digital solutions to social impact ventures, all deeply rooted in community relevance and sustainability.

Fellows Speak: Growth Through Experience

During the assessment, the fellows shared powerful testimonials about their experience so far. From overcoming imposter syndrome to mastering effective communication and teamwork, their stories highlighted a remarkable shift in confidence, clarity, and entrepreneurial mindset.

One fellow noted,

โ€œThe NEF programme has helped me understand that entrepreneurship is not just about ideas, but about execution, resilience, and collaboration. I now approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset.โ€

– Justin Mtunga

Looking Ahead

With two weeks remaining, the fellows will now enter the implementation phase of their projects โ€” pitching ideas, receiving feedback, and fine-tuning their business strategies. We are incredibly proud of their growth so far and confident that their impact will extend far beyond the walls of the Kwathu Kollective.

At Kwathu Kollective, we remain committed to shaping bold, capable, and socially-conscious entrepreneurs. Weโ€™re grateful for the continued partnership with MUST and look forward to scaling this impact across Malawi and beyond.
