The 2024 Women & Girls in Cyber Conference, held from August 13th to 15th at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, was a significant event aimed at empowering future women leaders in cybersecurity. This year’s theme, “Inspiring the Next Generation: Empowering Future Women Cybersecurity Professionals,” attracted experts and enthusiasts from across Africa, including active participation from the Kwathu Kollective team. The Kwathu Kollective team was proud to be part of this significant gathering, with our members Yankho Kamtukulo, Concern Matita, and Abigail Zingani actively participating in various sessions.
Conference Highlights: August 13-15
Day 1: Inspiring Beginnings The conference began with a strong focus on leadership and empowerment.
- Opening Ceremony: Welcome remarks by Mrs. Bridget Chibwana and a keynote address by Her Excellency Madam Monica Chakwera emphasized nurturing women leaders in cybersecurity.
- Morning Sessions: Insightful presentations on cybersecurity careers by Jacklyne Mbuthia and Exile Njoka, and a firechat with Malawi CERT’s first responders.
- Afternoon Discussions: Panels on empowering women in cybersecurity and emerging technologies, concluding with inspirational breakout sessions.
Day 2: Deepening Knowledge and Building Networks This day was dedicated to enhancing participants’ understanding of cybersecurity and fostering professional connections.
- Digital Law Presentation: Covered cybersecurity, data protection, and cybercrimes, relevant to participants from Kwathu Kollective.
- Panel Discussion: Focused on the role of men as allies in advancing women’s roles in cybersecurity.
- Afternoon Sessions: Presentations on cyber resilience by Mirza Asrar Baig and future cybersecurity trends, ending with an interactive session on protecting against cyber threats.
Day 3: Empowerment and Personal Development The final day centered on building confidence and personal growth.
- Morning Sessions: Emphasized developing a cybersecurity culture and the role of women in child online protection.
- Inspiring Firechat: Women leaders shared their experiences of breaking barriers in cybersecurity.
- Conclusion: TED-style talk on navigating cyber threats and a “Capture the Flag” competition showcasing young women’s technical skills.
The conference successfully highlighted the importance of empowerment, knowledge sharing, and building supportive networks in the field of cybersecurity.
Reflections and Looking Ahead
The 2024 Women & Girls in Cyber Conference was an inspiring and transformative experience for all who attended. Our team members, Yankho, Concern, and Abigail, left the event with new insights, valuable connections, and a renewed commitment to advancing cybersecurity in Malawi and beyond.
