Bants2Business Malawi Regional Pitching Event Recap | KWATHU UPGRADE

The Mafumu Hotel in Lilongwe transformed into a hub of entrepreneurial energy on August 9th as the Bants2Business Pitching Competition Finals unfolded. hosted by the charismatic Alex Kachepa and co-hosted by the diligent Abigail Zingani, was a resounding success which showcased the best of Malawi’s budding business talent.

Opening Remarks 

The event commenced with insightful opening remarks from Rhoda Kamwaza, the Managing Director of Ntha Foundation, who illuminated the path of the Kwathu Upgrade: Malawi Wanga Edition. Virgil Kwizera, representing the participants, shared his journey, while Elizabeth Bailie, the GIZ-MIERA TOURISM component leader, highlighted the project’s impact.

Panel Discussion 

A thought-provoking panel discussion on “Digital Tools for Tourism Management” ensued, moderated by Alex Kachepa. The panel featured Ian D’heygere of Nature’s Gift Ltd/Kumbali, Emma Chitanda of Mafumu Hotel, and Chikondi Mbewe of Chingalire Rural Home-stay, who shared their insights on integrating digital advancements in tourism.

Pitch Session 

The pitch session was a showcase of ambition and creativity. From Salima, Virgil Kwizera presented his vision as a Tour Operator, and Noah Chana brought the essence of Gwirize Cultural Village to life. Fiona Saka of Fimac Catering Services and Tupochere of Tiwale Art Gallery represented Zomba with their compelling pitches.

Judging and Awards 

The esteemed panel of judges, comprising Tamanda Kaleke, Elijah Lumbani Mkandawire, and Emma Katengeza, had the challenging task of selecting the winners.

Noah Chana, whose Gwirize Cultural Village pitch captivated the judges, was awarded the grand prize of €800. Fiona Saka’s delectable offerings through Fimac Catering Services earned her the second place and a prize of €500. The third place, along with €300, was secured by Virgil Kwizera for his insightful tour operator pitch. Lastly, Tupochere’s artistic flair with Tiwale Art Gallery was recognized with the fourth place and a prize of €200.

These awards not only serve as a financial boost to the winners but also as a testament to their dedication and potential to shape the future of tourism in Malawi. The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression of inspiration and the promise of growth within the tourism sector.

Closing Moments 

The event culminated with a series of group photos, capturing the smiles and triumphs of the winners and the major players of the event. It was a night that celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit of Malawi, leaving attendees inspired and looking forward to the next chapter of innovation in the tourism sector.
