Empowering Tourism Entrepreneurs in Salima | KWATHU UPGRADE

The Kwathu Upgrade: Tourism Edition project, funded by GIZ through AFC MEIRA GOPA under the MUZI Ecosystem Initiative, is making waves in Malawi. Implemented by the Ntha Foundation, this initiative aims to strengthen the tourism sector in Salima and Zomba districts by providing comprehensive training and support to local entrepreneurs in the digital media and creation space. Specifically, the project targets women-led and youth-led SMEs, as well as marginalized individuals involved in tourism-related trades such as hospitality, tour guiding, memorabilia selling, tourism content creation, photography, cultural music, and dance.

The Workshop: Unleashing Business Potential

Date: 19 June 2024

Venue: Salima Technical College

During the sixth week of the project, the Ntha Foundation team organized a dynamic workshop led by Mr. Alex Kachepa, a seasoned Business Development and Marketing Specialist. The focus? Creating and utilizing a Business Model Canvas – a powerful tool for entrepreneurs.

Workshop Objectives

  • Understanding the Components: Participants delved into the intricacies of the Business Model Canvas, dissecting its various elements.
  • Applying to Tourism: We explored how each canvas component directly relates to the tourism sector. From customer segments to revenue streams, the canvas came alive with possibilities.
  • Analyzing Existing Businesses: Entrepreneurs learned how to use the canvas to scrutinize their existing tourism ventures. What’s working? Where are the gaps? How can innovation thrive?
  • Crafting New Ideas: Armed with newfound insights, participants developed fresh business ideas using the Business Model Canvas framework.
